7. Paint the imperial eagle icons on the model with white paint. Allow the model to dry for two hours.

8. Seal the model with clear acrylic sealer to prevent the colors from chipping or fading. Allow the sealer to dry for 24 hours.

It is constantly exposed to the elements from blazing sun to pouring rain, freezing temperatures and sleet, hail and snow. It literally takes a beating every day of the year and eventually the window trim will need to be repainted. Use these steps to make your window trim look as good as new.

Instructions

1. Scrape away all of the loose paint with the scraper. Remove the loose caulk as well. Depending on how good of a painter you are you may want to use painters tape around the glass or you can use a razor blade to remove dried paint off the glass when finished. Fill any holes or creases with the spackle, wiping off the excess. Allow to dry. Move on to the next window repeating these steps if applicable.

2. Once the spackle has dried, take the sanding block and sand the area smooth. Use 220 grit sandpaper for this. Make sure to go around the whole window. Wipe with a cloth to get the dust and dirt off.

3. Insert a caulk tube into the caulk gun and squeeze trigger twice. Cut the tip off the tube and check to see if there is a seal that needs to be broken. If there is, insert a screwdriver to puncture the foil seal. Run a bead of caulk into the space where the old caulk was removed. Dampen your finger and smooth over with a gentle pressure. Wipe excess off your finger with an old rag.. You may have to wipe the bead a few to smooth. This has to dry completely before you paint. Keep moving to other windows while previous ones are drying.

4. Prime the window trim. Priming is a way to waterproof your trim. Use an exterior grade primer and put on at least one coat. Two coats are better. Allow it to completely dry before putting on the finish coat.

5. Apply a finish coat of paint and let it dry. Apply a second coat when the first coat is dry. If you used painters tape you will want to remove that. Take the utility knife and score it along the paint edge first so it does not remove your paint.Then gently pull off. If there is any excess left on the glass you can scrape it off with your razor. Wash windows with glass cleaner.

4. Mix 3/4-cup of vinegar with 1/4-cup of water. Test spraying and cleaning with vinegar in an inconspicuous area of exterior paint to ensure that it does not damage the paint. Leave the vinegar in the test place for 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Rinse the test spot thoroughly. If the vinegar causes damage to the paint, use plain water and a scrub brush to clean the mold. Be careful not to scratch the paint and cause flaking. If the test spot is not harmed, it is safe to proceed with using vinegar to remove mold from the rest of the exterior.

6. Spray the affected area liberally with the vinegar and water solution. Saturate the area with vinegar, being careful to avoid grass and decorative foliage. Allow the vinegar solution to sit for 10 to 15 minutes to dissolve the mold.

7. Lightly scrub the mold from the paint. Use light circular patterns while scrubbing, taking care to not score the paint or cause flaking or peeling. A washcloth can be handy in wiping away the sludge that is produced by scrubbing off the mold.

8. Wash the entire exterior with a garden hose, taking care to remove all traces of mold and vinegar from the walls and ground below. Wash from top to bottom to fully rinse the mold spores from the foundation and walls.

5. Continue dipping the sponge into the paint and pressing it onto the walls to cover the splotchy areas. As paint wears off the sponge, work toward the outward edges of the splotchy areas. This creates a thinner layer of paint on the edges, blending it with the existing wall paint.

6. Allow the interior paint to dry for 24 hours and repeat the process with a clean sponge if any splotchy areas remain.

More Prep

Put a small piece of wood, such as a matchstick, between the louvers and the adjustment lever. This will create a space between the louvers and the adjustment lever, preventing a pooling area for paint. Spray painting is the recommended method for painting shutters.

Apply Primer

Prop your shutters up against something you've covered with a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area. Shake your can of primer thoroughly, about one minute. Hold the can about 12 inches from the surface. Begin making a left to right movement with the can before you start spraying, then start spraying.

Spray with a single fluid motion from left to right. Continue the movement after you've removed your finger from the spray button. Move to the next area, using the same method. Repeat this until the front side is fully painted. Turn the shutter sideways and lightly spray the areas beneath the adjustment lever, from 12 inches away. Turn the shutter over and open the slats about 45 degrees. Lightly spray over the louvers from left to right, using the same continuous motion methods. Allow the primer to dry.

Many newer homes feature open splan with high ceilings, tall foyers and high wals. While it might seem like a daunting task to paint an 18-foot wall, you can accomplish the task yourself safely with the right tools, as long as you're comfortable with heights and working on an extension ladder. Approach the job methodically with all the necessary tools and materials gathered before you start and work from the top of the wall down. You should be able to paint the wall in a day.

Instructions

1. Prepare the area for painting. Remove window coverings and art work from the wall. Push furniture to the other side of the room to allow you plenty of space to set up a ladder.

2. Protect trim and baseboards with painter's tape. Press down the tape firmly with your fingers to prevent paint from bleeding through.

3. Extend a 16-foot extension ladder to a comfortable working height for reaching the top of the wall. Place it against the wall. The distance between the base of the ladder and the bottom of the wall should measure about 1 foot for every 4 feet of ladder height. In other words, the base of a fully-extended 16-foot ladder should be 4 feet from the wall.

4. Protect the floor below the wall with drop cloths or builder's rosin paper.

5. Climb the ladder. Remove dust and cobwebs from the top of the wall using a soft brush or feather duster. Repair nail pops and cracks with Spackling paste by applying it with a putty knife. Unless you have a steady hand, apply 2-inch painter's tape to the ceiling where it meets the wall.

6. Fill cracks and gouges on the lower part of the wall, using a 6-foot stepladder to reach the areas half-way up. After the repairs are dry, sand them if necessary.

7. Mix all of the paint you'll be using together in a 5-gallon bucket. This ensures uniformity of color; there may be slight differences between gallon cans of paint. Pour a little of the mixed paint into a bucket or one of the paint cans.

8. Paint along the top of the wall at the ceiling using a 3-inch wall brush. Work your way from one end to the other, and then start at the beginning and apply a second coat. Remove the tape from the ceiling and take the extension ladder down.

9. Paint the edges of the rest of the wall with the brush, either from the ground or from a stepladder.

10. Roll a first coat of paint on the wall, starting at the top and working down toward the bottom in sections. Either work from the ground, using a 12-foot telescoping extension pole, or from the stepladder using a 6- or 8-foot extension pole.

11. Apply a second coat around the trim and along the baseboards with your brush while the wall is drying. Allow everything to dry for about two hours.

12. Roll a second coat of paint on the wall. Let it dry for at least two more hours before removing the painter's tape.

Paint the Window Box

1. Purchase a plastic window box from any discount or craft store.

4. Cut the florist foam to fit inside the window box. The top of the foam should be about 1/8-inch above the top of window box.

Dry out your paint to dispose of it properly.

Disposing of house paint in the proper way is important for the environment. Never pour leftover paint down the drain or in your yard. But you don't need to store old paint because you don't know what to do with it. If all else fails, you can take it to your local recycling center designated for hazardous waste. However, you can safely dispose of paint in your trash can if you dry it out first.

Equipment Needed

Gather the following equipment: Plastic trash bags, sturdy stick, shallow cardboard boxes, newspaper, kitty litter or dirt. The amount of litter/dirt and number of boxes will depend on the volume of paint you need to get rid of.

Procedure

Dry your paint out so it will be accepted in your landfill. You cannot throw liquid paint into the city trash, but paint that has dried is acceptable. Open the newspapers and line your boxes with them. Pour in the kitty litter or dirt and spread it evenly to a depth of about 1 inch. Pour the paint onto the kitty litter being careful not to pour in too much, you can always add more later. Use the stick to stir the mixture so the paint gets absorbed into the litter. Be sure to empty all of the paint from the can. Now let the boxes of paint and the cans sit undisturbed until they are completely dried out. When they are dry, place the boxes of dried painted kitty litter, the stick and the empty paint cans into the plastic bag and tie it closed. Dispose of the bag along with your regular trash.

Recycle

Check to make sure you cannot use the paint before you throw it out. Put an extra coat on your wall or do some touch-up work. If you cannot use it, see if anyone else can. If you have a lot of paint consider donating it to an organization or another person. If your paint is too old or if you just have a small amount then dry it out and get rid of it. In the future, try to use up your paint before it goes bad. Don't store it on a concrete floor as this might cause the can to rust a lot faster. Make sure you close the lid tightly and store the can upside down to prevent air from entering the can. If you can extend the life of your paint, you may be able to use it or recycle it instead of disposing of it.

2. Dip a large paintbrush into primer and coat the entire wall in an even layer. Turn the paintbrush sideways and run the tips up and down the indentations between the wall panels. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours. If you can still detect any of the wall paneling's previous color, repeat this step.

3. Paint over the primer with wall paint, using large paintbrushes in the same manner as the primer. If you cannot get the large paintbrush into the space between wall panelings, use a smaller paintbrush instead.

4. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before replacing furniture and wall hangings.

Look through the gallery of accessories and décor. Add decorative pillows, vases, mirrors, area rugs, wall décor, indoor plants and any other accents that appeal to you. Remember not to clutter the room. Explore options for curtains, drapes or blinds if the program offers window-treatment options.

6. Enhance your design by viewing it from every angle.

Utilize all of the different viewing options available. View a 3-D model of the room to get a better perspective of your furniture placement. Make any changes necessary to enhance the design. View the room with different lighting if the option is available.

What Colors Complement Silver

Silver, like its non-shiny counterpart gray, is a neutral color. This means that silver coordinates with everything else. When selecting a color to match with silver, whether paint for the walls or clothes for your body, style will dictate which colors you select. Silver can seem warm, cold, modern or traditional depending on what it is paired with, so first determine the overall look you are trying to achieve with your design and work from there.

Wearables

If silver is being used in an accessory such as jewelry, shoes or a handbag, you can choose any other color for your clothing and the silver will not clash. Your outfit could be anything from a conservative business suit to a skimpy club dress and silver accessories would fit right in. If your clothing is silver and you are trying to match accessories, select colors that work best with your coloring. For example, if you look best in jewel tones, add accessories in deep purple or teal. Black is always a classic option, particularly for party outfits. Paint

If you have silver decor or furniture pieces and are trying to pick a paint color, consider whether your style is more modern or traditional, if the room will be casual or formal, and whether you want a warm or cool feel. For a modern room, bright orange, teal or white would contrast with cool silver. Tips About Painting Over Spackle

Flawless finish

Painting over spackle or joint compound without properly sanding or priming it will result in an irregular surface or dull spots where the paint isn't blended in properly. Using the wrong type of primer may even cause shiny spots in the finished paint. The same goes for exterior spackle.

When to Use Spackle

Spackle (spackling paste) is one of several types of filler. Others include joint or drywall compound, wood putty, stucco and masonry patch and plaster of Paris. Spackle comes in a variety of forms. Lightweight spackling is commonly used for interiors. It dries quickly, doesn't shrink and sands easily. Stress cracks or joints that expand and contract are best filled with flexible elastomeric spackle. Vinyl spackle can be used on exterior siding and trim.

All spackle is intended only for smaller repairs and narrow cracks. Using the right spackle will ensure a long-lasting repair.

Painting Over Interior Spackle

If the spackle repair is on a smooth surface, it needs to be sanded very flush so there are no ridges. Feel for roughness by running your hand over the repair. If the spackle patch is on a textured wall, you may not have to sand at all.

Because a spackle patch is more porous than the surrounding surface, it needs to be primed before applying the finish coat, otherwise it will show as a dull spot. There is no need to use a special primer; any water-based general purpose or drywall primer will do. Use whatever paint you are using to finish the paint job. Allow it to dry for about four hours before recoating.

Avoid using a stain-killing primer on the patch. These are very dense primers and may make the primed spot less absorbent than the surrounding wall. Rather than resulting in a dull spot, you may end up with a shiny spot.

To achieve a blended, seamless finish for a touch-up, use the same application method that was used for the original surface. In other words, use a roller for a rolled wall, or a brush for a door that's been brushed. Extend the painting touch-up well beyond the edges of the patched area, and lightly feather the edges so it blends seamlessly.

Painting Over Exterior Spackle

Because exteriors are subject to direct sunlight and more temperature and humidity extremes, materials used for patching and painting the outside of your home have to be more flexible and resistant to the elements. A common mistake people make when using spackle outside is neglecting to prime bare wood before spackling. Bare wood is absorbent and will leach moisture from the patch, causing it to dry out and crack. Prime the wood, let it dry and then apply the spackle.

To paint over exterior spackle, use two coats of the finish paint, allowing four hours drying time between coats.

1. Pick the color for your home and trim. The type of colors that will look good with your brown roof depend on the shade of the roof. A warm brown will often look best with warm colors. 5. Paint the edges of your house -- the areas closest to the trim, ground and the roof. Paint any areas that you will need to cover with a paintbrush, including nooks and tight places like the underside of each siding board. This is known as "cutting in."

6. Paint the siding with a roller.

7. Paint the trim. Use an angled sash brush.

4. Look for wheatboard bathroom cabinets, which are typically made from wheat straw and a nontoxic binder. Cabinets made from conventional particleboard and medium-density fiberboard, known as MDF, can emit toxic chemicals such as formaldehyde. Cabinets made from supportive, harvested wood are another eco-friendly option.

5. Prevent mold and mildew by installing a bath fan that reduces moisture. Make sure the fan is safe for installation over tubs and showers.

Chalkboard Paint

Let's face it, kids are going to draw on the walls, so painting with chalkboard paint is a great way to let their creativity blossom while keeping your blood pressure stable. Of course chalkboard paint isn't just great for the kids, it's also extremely useful in the kitchen where it can be used in a high-visibility space for notes and reminders, or beside the pantry door to keep an up to date inventory list of staples and a shopping list. If you have older appliances, chalkboard paint can even be used to give your refrigerator an interactive face lift. Chalkboard paint comes in traditional chalkboard colors like black, green and brown, but some brands have now developed a white that can be tinted with any color to match any room theme.

Magnetic Paint

Magnetic paint is a great idea for the office or craft studio. It should be noted that the magnetic property of the paint will increase with each successive layer of paint, so if you use just one or two coats you'll be more successful with sheet magnets than refrigerator magnets, but four or five coats paired with stronger magnets will hold heavier objects like kitchen timers, pens and pencils or large pieces of paper. Magnetic paint also tends to create a rougher texture than regular paint, so sanding between coats may be necessarily for a smoother finish. The best part about this interactive painting idea is that it is designed to be covered over with regular latex paint, so it blends in easily with any decor and looks a bit like magic. It even works under chalkboard paint.

Projection Screens

You can really enhance your home theater by turning one wall into a projection screen for a high definition projection TV. Though it might be tempting to use plain white paint for this idea, it's not the best option. A soft gray semi-gloss paint would be acceptable, but there are also paints available specifically for this use. Whether you use a special screen paint or a regular latex, a black non-reflective border should be painted in around the viewing area to optimize color contrast and reduce light bleed.

Plain white walls, though thought of as boring, can also be exciting when you make them interactive. Invite friends over to write, draw or paint on the walls, or simply keep a basket of colorful art supplies handy for whenever inspiration hits. Lightening Strip Paint and Mastic Remover strips multiple layers of paint from concrete with only one application by causing the bottom layer of paint to expand and weaken its adhesion to the concrete. It can be used with water and oil-based paints, acrylic paints, primers and more and, because it gels to the surface as it is applied, it can be used for vertical surfaces as well. Lightening Strip will also remove waterproofing paint, but will not remove silicon-based sealers. The stripper is applied with a non-aerosol spray rather than a brush and the paint residue from Lightening Strip can be cleaned with only water. You will be able to cover approximately 150 square feet per gallon of Lightening Strip for 1 to 2 layers of paint and approximately 75 square feet per gallon with 2 to 4 layers of paint. One gallon of stripper is sold for $38 as of December 2010.

SoyClean Paint Stripper contains no methylene chloride. SoyClean soy-based paint stripper, an environmentally friendly product, rinses away with water and contains 100 percent natural ingredients.
