Hand painting adds depth and personality to plain white tile.
One way to update the tile in your home is to hand paint it. The material cost is low -- certainly lower than replacing the tile -- and the creative potential is infinite. You can paint almost any ceramic tile in your house. But avoid areas that are continually in contact with moisture, such as the tile on tub or shower surrounds, because the high moisture levels can cause the paint to swell and peel.
Instructions
1. Scrub the tile clean with a scrubbing sponge and a commercial abrasive tile cleaner such as Comet or Ajax. Rinse the tile twice with a moist sponge. If the tile was quite soiled before you started cleaning, scrub and rinse a second time. Paint only adheres to clean surfaces.
2. Tape off any areas that you do not want to get paint on such as grout and areas next to the tile. If you are painting decorative designs on the ceramic tile and not covering the entire surface with paint, you might not need to tape off the grout.
3. Paint the tile. If you are painting the entire surface, use a paint roller. If you are using stencils or painting free-hand, use a small artist's paintbrush.
4. Allow the paint to dry for the manufacturer-recommended amount of time before adding a second layer of paint.
5. Allow the paint to cure for three days after the last coat.
6. Seal the paint job with a clear water-based urethane top coat.
