Knowing the basics of painting will make a difference.
Painting is one of the most economical and popular ways to improve your home. Painting a room or wall can drastically change the way your entire house looks and can be loads of fun. It can also become a hassle if you don't know the right way to do it. Although different types of paints may require different application techniques, the baisc in this article will apply to painting most any wall.
Instructions
1. Use a soapy dishwater solution to wash the walls, ceilings and trim to remove dirt and grime build up. This should be followed by a water rise and the walls should be allowed to dry completely.
2. Remove all nails and fill the holes with spackling compound and a putty knife. Let the spackle dry, then sand with 220 grit sandpaper until smooth and flush with surrounding surfaces. Wipe off any dust that is created.
3. Tape off any trim or floorboards with painters tape to avoid any accidents. Begin by using a brush to paint about 4 inches in around all trim.
4. Paint the wall with a primer. Use a latex-based stain-blocking primer to cover the old wall paint and any stains that may be present. Roll it on evenly with a roller. Fill a paint tray up with primer, dip the roller in the paint tray and apply the primer to the wall. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
5. Pick a high quality paint and tools. It does make a difference. Cheap brushes may shed and cheap rollers may pill or break while in use. Although you can get away with less expensive painting tools when priming the wall, higher quality tools for the finish coat will make a difference.
6. When using a roller to apply the finishing coat, paint 2-3 square feet sections at a time. Roll the paint in the section in a "M" shape without lifting the roller from the wall. Then fill in the "M" without lifting the roller from the wall with more horizontal or vertical zigzag strokes. Repeat the technique blending each section as you go.
7. Before starting a new wall make sure you have enough paint for the entire wall. Paint may differ slightly in color and is not as noticeable wall to wall as side by side.
