Fix Metallic Door That's Chipping

Paint metal doors any color you like.

Metal doors start chipping because the original paint wasn't applied properly. This is usually caused by a surface that wasn't properly prepared or a paint that isn't suited for the material. The best way to fix chipping doors is to remove the paint and reapply using proper techniques. This results in a painted door that lasts for years. Set aside a few days to paint the door because each coat of primer and paint needs to cure before you add another layer of paint.

Instructions

1. Remove the door knobs, hinges and any other hardware on the door using a screwdriver. Put painter's tape around any window to protect it from the paint.

2. Rub the door with a stiff metal brush to remove as much of the chipping paint as possible.

3. Apply a paint remover designed for metal to the door using a rag or a bristle paint brush. Leave the remover on the door for the time specified in the directions. Scrape off the paint with a putty knife.

4. Neutralize the paint remover with the type of neutralizer recommended by the manufacturer. Vinegar is often used as a paint neutralizer.

5. Sand the door with 120-grit sandpaper to give it a rough surface to which the paint can cling. Wipe the door with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust. Avoid scratching any grooves into the door as you sand.

6. Apply a metal primer to the door. Use an aerosol, spray-on primer or apply a primer with a bristle brush. Allow it to cure according to package directions. Use exterior-grade primer.

7. Paint the door using paint that is compatible with the chosen primer. Use a bristle brush and roller or spray can to apply the paint. Allow it to cure and apply a second coat. Use exterior-grade paint.
