Coat A Rv Roof

Roof coating is used on mobile home roofs to waterproof the home and extend the life of the roof. In warm climates, roof coating may also be used to reflect light to insulate the mobile home from becoming too hot during the summer months. Depending on the type of roof coating applied, mobile home roofs will need to be recoated every 2 to 10 years. To save yourself work, it might be wise to buy a higher-end roof coating that needs replaced less often.

Instructions

1. Lean a ladder up against the mobile home so that you can access the roof. Be sure to secure the ladder in a safe manner.

2. Remove any part of the old roof coating that is flaking or peeling with a wire brush or sand paper.

3. Sweep the roof to remove dirt and dust.

4. In a large bucket, mix a solution that is one part chlorine bleach to three parts water. Use this solution and a stiff push broom or large scrub brush to wash the entire roof.

5. Use a hose to rinse the roof and allow the roof to dry.

6. With a stiff brush, apply patching cement to any seams and screw heads on the roof. Also apply patching cement to the j-rail that runs along the edge of the roof and to any flashing. Patching cement should extend 1 inch beyond all seams and edges.

7. Allow the patching cement to dry.

8. Open and stir the roof coating.

9. Apply the roof coating to the roof with a clean brush or roller. This may be easier if you pour some of the roof coating into a paint pan. It is important to follow the directions on the roof coating as to how thick the coating should be applied and how many square feet a container of roof coating should cover.

10. Allow the roof coating to dry. If the directions require it, apply a second coat to the roof when the first coat has dried.
