Finding the right color can be difficult if you don't know what you're doing.
Matching colors to existing carpet can be a difficult and somewhat arcane process, especially if decorating isn't your forte'. So much depends on individual tastes and style that there isn't really a "one-size-fits-all" answer to the predicament. Still, there are a few methods you can use to figure out which wall colors would go best with a tan carpet as well as the other colors in the room.
Monochromatic Schemes
Sometimes the best color to match with a tan carpet is...well, tan, or colors that are within the same color range as tan, such as shades of brown or deeper (or lighter) shades of tan. This is known as a monochromatic color scheme in which all the colors in the room -- or at least the ones on the walls and floor -- come from the same basic area on the color wheel.
Adjacent Color Schemes
Colors immediately next to tan on the color wheel will also provide an aesthetically pleasing look when combined with the first color. These colors include shades of yellow or red. Ideally, the shades you select should have a different hue and intensity from the tan color to provide variety and to not overwhelm whoever might be looking at them.
Complementary Colors
Complementary colors are colors that are immediately opposite each other on the color wheel. Tan's complementary color typically ranges somewhere from dark to light blue, depending on the exact shade of tan. Anything within this range should work well with your tan carpet and look good on your walls.
Triadic Color Schemes
Triadic color schemes involve creating a room with three colors that are the same distance from one another on the color wheel. In tan's case, the colors would be tan, a shade of turqoise and a shade of violet. If you use a triadic color scheme, you should select one of the shades to be the "dominant" shade and use the other colors as accents to the first. For example, paint one wall tan and the other three walls violet.
