A Designer'S Help Guide To Color

Color theory basics are a must have for a designers color guide.

Color sets the mood for a room, a painting or even clothing. No matter what you are designing, a color guide and an understanding of basic color theory is a must.

Complimentary Colors

Complementary colors are located across from each other on an artist's color wheel and are total opposites. For example, the complementary color for yellow on the color wheel is green. Team sport uniforms are usually made with complementary colors, and Christmas red and green are complementary colors.

Analogous Colors

Analogous colors are commonly used by interior designers to set a color palette for a room. Analogous colors are three different shades located next to each other on the color wheel (or on a paint strip). A designer will pick one dominant color and use the other two to build around it.

Warm and Cool Colors

Cool colors, considered relaxing and soothing, are often used for bedrooms. Blue invokes images of water, sky and peaceful feelings. Warm colors are considered more energetic and eye-catching. Red often invokes feelings of fire and warmth. Warm color often contrasts with cool, adding "pop" to a room, painting or a piece of clothing.
