Painting over
a red wall can take a little extra patience.
Changing the color of a bright red room can provide a fresh, new look and feel to your home at a relatively inexpensive cost. However, painting over red walls can prove a bit more challenging than painting over other colors, especially if you plan to paint the room a lighter color. With a little bit of patience, as well as some paint primer, it is possible to create the look you desire.
Instructions
1. Prepare the walls for painting. Using a screwdriver, remove all electrical covers such as outlet covers and switch covers. Cover electric switches and outlets with painter's tape.
2. Apply primer over the bright red walls using a paint roller. Primers generally are white, but they can be tinted any color before purchased. If you decide to have your primer tinted, use the same color you plan to paint the walls. To ensure full coverage, apply a second coat of primer once the first coat is dry to the touch. Allow the primer to dry completely, about 24 hours.
3. Paint the walls your desired color using a paint roller. Apply paint by rolling a "W" or "M" shape across the wall. Spread the paint out by going back over the shape using vertical strokes. This allows you to evenly distribute paint onto the walls. You may need to apply a second coat of paint, and possibly a third, once the previous coat is dry to the touch.
