Traditional Exterior Fresh paint Colors

White and black are traditional exterior colors.

Traditional exterior paint colors look at home on the classic architectural styles, such as Colonial Revival, Tudor or Cape Cod. While the most classic palette is white with black shutters, other traditional exterior color choices include buttery yellow, soft-gray blue and earthy neutrals. Subdued and tasteful, these colors have stood the test of time on homes of these classic styles and other homes as well.

Classic White

No exterior color is as clean and traditional as classic white, especially with black shutters and a red door. This color combination has stood the test of time and looks good on any style of home, but especially suits a Colonial Revival. Behr's choice is Frost (4057) on the body, Beluga (770F-7) on the shutters, and Boston brick (160F-6) on the door.

Yellow

Yellow is another traditional choice for exteriors, from bright and sunny to soft and buttery. Benjamin Moore's soleil (AF-330) and weston flax (HC-5) are yellows recommended for traditional architecture. Bottle green and other blackened greens are a traditional accent color for shutters and doors on yellow houses.

Blues

Light blues, especially those with gray in them, are traditional color choices for home exteriors. Blues especially suit Victorian homes and Cape Cods. Behr recommends dolphin fin (790C-3) on the body, with shutters in the slightly darker windmill wings (610E-1) as one of its traditional blue palettes.

Neutrals

As color choices have expanded over the decades, the definition of what is traditional also is changing, according to Sherwin-Williams. While white and light colors were always considered safe, consumers now are leaning toward new traditionals, such as tinted neutrals playing off the surrounding landscaping and midtone values of those neutrals.
