The woodgrain on a bookshelf can run in a variety of directions, so it's crucial that you paint each piece in the direction of the grain. Using the right materials and a solid technique will leave you with a beautiful piece of furniture.
Instructions
1. Remove the back panel of your bookshelf. The back panel is typically tacked into place with small nails, or it may be screwed on if it's a higher-quality piece of furniture.
2. Take out any of the shelves that are removable. Painting them is far easier this way, and the results will be of a much higher quality.
3. Tape over any hardware, such as metal tracks for adjusting the shelves. You don't want to plug any of those openings with paint.
4. Dust the entire bookshelf and all of it's components with a damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt that may hinder the paint from adhering. If the bookshelf is very dirty, you might want to clean it first with trisodium phosphate, or TSP.
5. Apply the primer in the same direction as the woodgrain on your bookshelf using appropriately sized paint rollers. For small bookshelves, select small foam rollers.
6. Paint with a latex paint in any color of your choice. Allow each piece to thoroughly dry before you reassemble your bookshelf.
