Your motorcycle
's gas tank is arguably the most import part of its aesthetic qualities. It's the most notable part for its shape, which is often unique to certain brands of motorcycles. Make your motorcycle gas tank stick out in the crowd with a stellar do-it-yourself paint job.
Instructions
1. Use your motorcycle's owner's manual or a Clymer's Shop Manual to remove the tank from your motorcycle. Turn the fuel petcock to the off position before removing it, but there is no need to remove the fuel from the tank.
2. Use waterproof 600-grit sandpaper to rough the surface of the tank. Make sure the area you're working in is well-ventilated and easy to clean. Do not completely remove the old paint; scuff it so that the new paint will stick more permanently.
3. Clean the tank with soap and warm water and allow it to dry completely.
4. Spray the first coats of paint onto the tank in a well-ventilated area. Spray lightly and evenly to avoid drips and runs. Wet-sand with 600-grit sandpaper between coats.
5. Allow the tank to dry and spray one final coat of paint. When the last coat dries completely, wet-sand with 800-grit sandpaper until shiny and smooth.
6. Spray a thick (but not runny) coat of clear-gloss spray enamel over the paint on the tank. When this coat is dry, wet-sand extremely lightly with 1,000-grit waterproof sandpaper and allow the tank to dry completely before reattaching it to the motorcycle.
