Calculate Just How Much Fresh paint You Have To Fresh paint Your Walls

Choosing a color and calculating the amount of paint needed are two of the first steps in a paint project.

Painting projects rejuvenate homes and give a new appearance to any surface. One of the first steps to any painting project is determining the amount of paint needed to cover the surface. The process involves simple measurements and calculations that determine the area of the intended paint surface. Determining the area allows you to make a final calculation that depends on the type of paint you're using.

Instructions

1. Measure the width and height of each wall you plan to paint.

2. Multiply the width by the height to determine the square footage of the wall. For example, a wall 8 feet high and 20 feet wide has a surface area of 160 square feet. Perform similar measurements for windows, doors or other spots that you don't plan to paint and subtract their areas from the total surface area.

3. Add the surface area of all walls in the project together to generate the total square footage of the project. Include the area of the ceiling, if necessary, in any interior painting project.

4. Divide the total square footage of the project by the estimated coverage of the paint. The estimated coverage is commonly displayed on the label of the can of paint. For example, if the total project is 800 square feet and the estimated paint coverage is 300 square feet per gallon, the project is estimated to take 2.66 gallons of paint. Purchase three gallons to allow some margin for spillage or waste.
