A template is a superb tool for sign painting. It allows you to create a large number of signs that can be painted in using a blunt stencil brush or spray paint. The template or stencil can be used over and over, depending on the durability of the paper or cardboard you use. Card stock makes a good template material as it is both sturdy and easy to cut. By using tracing paper, you can copy any image or lettering style you want for your template. Low-tack tape or drafting tape allows you to attach the traced image to your card stock and remove it without tearing the card stock.
Instructions
1. Place your tracing paper over the design, sign, lettering or other pattern you are using for your template. Use the low-tack tape if you can to hold it in place; otherwise, use your non-drawing hand to secure it.
2. Trace the outlines of the design onto the tracing paper.
3. Gently tape the tracing paper onto the card stock in the position you want it in. Don't rub the tape, just push it hard enough to hold the tracing paper in place.
4. Cut through the tracing paper to cut out your template. It is helpful to cut on a wood work surface or soft mat. This way you have a good cutting surface and won't damage a nice table. Make sure you are cutting all the way through the card stock.
5. Remove the tracing paper and cut out areas of the card stock to reveal your sign painting template.
