Painting a pool ladder can be a challenge. Each kind of ladder material requires the use of a different paint or technique. Luckily there are painting options available for every type of ladder material. With proper application the ladder will stay painted and sealed for years.
Waterproof Paints
The use of a waterproof paint is essential for any ladder material that will be submerged under the water or wet on a regular basis. Each kind of material used for the ladder will require a different kind of waterproof paint and painting procedure. In general, epoxy paints are the best for waterproofing. Some acrylic or latex paints also are designed for waterproofing, however, not all acrylic paints can be used on all ladder materials.
Metal Ladders
Metal is a hard material to paint. The surface of metal is smooth and does not have a porous surface. However, there are paint options for metal surfaces. A marine-grade epoxy paint is the best choice. These paints can be applied without priming, and it forms a hard bond to the surface of the metal that resists chipping. Try to find a solvent-free epoxy paint. This will produce the longest-lasting and most water resistant finish. Paint can be applied with a paint brush and should sit for 48 hours before use.
Plastic Ladders
Plastic, PVC and resin ladders also can be a challenge to paint. Most paints have a hard time sticking to plastic because the material expands and contracts with the air temperature. However, there are some paint options for plastic ladders as well. Some companies make spray paints designed for plastic use. These plastic paints have flexible ingredients ideal for plastic. Some companies make a spray that also will add texture to the plastic. This is ideal for ladder steps to reduce slippery surfaces for added safety. Spray the paint over the ladder and allow to sit for one day before adding another coat. The paint will be fully cured after seven days.
Wood Ladders
Wood ladders can be pained with a wider variety of paints. Since wood is more prone to rot than plastic or metal, the waterproofing needs of wood are greater. An epoxy primer will work great on wood to prevent water from seeping into the the wood. Once primed, any compatible waterproof paint can be used. Usually acrylic or latex waterproof paints can be used. Apply the primer with a paint brush and allow to dry for two days. Apply the waterproof paint and allow to cure for another two days before using.
