Limestone House
Choosing the right color to complement the limestone elements in your home's exterior can mean the difference between a stunning facade and an ugly one. Stick to exterior colors that will not only match or complement the limestone work but also will not clash with other exterior elements, such a flowering shrubs or trees.
Cool Colors
Being a cool-toned stone, limestone is often complemented by cool colors, such as blues, greens and grays. If the limestone on your home's exterior is a lighter, almost white color, choose a bolder cool color, such as indigo or a true green to make your home stand out. If the stones are a darker, deeper color, like gray, go for a lighter color on the palette. Pale sea greens, light blues and pearly grays often complement dark-toned stone.
Bold Colors
In modern homes, exterior limestone walls are added as more of a decorative element. Garages, porches, chimneys or a small section of the home exterior may be finished in limestone. However, in many older homes, limestone was used much like brick, and adding even a hint more of a cool color could make your home look dismal. Instead, add a bit of spice to all that gray exterior by choosing a bold color as an accent. Paint trim, doors and other wood accents with a deep red, yellow or maybe even a hunter green to get a striking look. To create the best effect, stick with only one accent color. Two many accent colors on a home exterior can make the outside look unplanned and a little odd.
Neutral Colors
If you're worried you'll choose wrong or a lot of color isn't your style, you can always go with a neutral tone. Tans, beiges and shades of white tend to complement limestone well, and you don't have to worry about the colors clashing. If non-limestone exterior surfaces are limited, black can be used sparingly as an accent, but white usually works best. If you choose to go with a neutral, stay away from grays. Too much of a good thing can make your home look more than a little sad and worn.
