Choose a color palette for the exterior and interior of your home that reflects who you are, the mood you are setting and the ambiance you are creating. Whether you choose the warmth of reds or the coolness of blues, the happiness of oranges or passive pinks, your color palette surrounds you and enhances your mental attitudes. From the exterior of the house to its smallest interior room, your home's colors reflect your personality and sensibilities.
Instructions
1. Find out whether there are any restrictions on the exterior colors for your home in your community. Choose from among the colors suggested by the governing committee of your community. Understand the climate of your area and select a color that will correspond with hot summers or cold winters for energy efficiency. Select a light color if you live in a hot climate to reduce the amount of heat absorbed into the home from the hot sun. Use a dark color if you live in a cold climate to retain the sun's heat.
2. Look at the exterior of your house and define its style. Choose colors such as white, terracotta or pink if your home is a Mediterranean style and trim the house in a contrasting color, such as blue for a white exterior, cream for a terracotta and white for a pink exterior. Paint your house a dark color such as brown, red, gray or blue if your house is a colonial or early American style and you are located in the north. Trim the house with a light color to create a separation in the dark colors, or hang shutters painted in a lighter color.
3. Decide if you like warm, cool or neutral colors. Choose a theme color for your living areas and then enhance that theme with two less prominent colors that coordinate well with the original color. Accessorize with the secondary colors once your theme has been established. Use colors that enhance your complexion and coloring, attest to your personality and provide a background for your home's furnishings and accessories.
4. Choose reds, oranges and yellows to convey warmth, energy and joy in the interior of your home. Employ feng shui principles to your color scheme and use red for passionate areas, orange for harmonious gatherings and yellow for optimism. Use red sparingly, as it doesn't promote rest and relaxation. Stay with a warm color palette by painting your kitchen a variation of yellow, such as honeysuckle, and add red or orange accessories.
5. Build your palette with blues, greens and purples for a cool overtone to your decor. Create a meditative aura in your home by painting your bedroom a very light green and use lavender as an accessory color. Further the color scheme by painting your living room a light blue or teal and bring the greens and purples in for accessorizing. Continue the theme by painting the kitchen a bold blue and use bright green for accessories. Display a spray of dried lavender to complete the theme.
6. Use a color scheme of gray, black, white, brown, beige or tan to create a neutral base for the addition of accent colors. Paint living room walls a creamy latte and accessorize with gray and a crisp white. Use variants of these colors throughout the house and bring color into the rooms by contrasting the neutrals with warm colors.
