Instilling eco-friendly habits in kids means they will carry those habits with them into adulthood. The most direct way to do this is to show them different ways that they can make a difference to their environment. (Of course, it’s also important to set an example by following those same rules.)
Instructions
1. Teach them conserve water. Explain how important water is to the environment and show them all the ways they use water every day. Teach them to turn off the water when they are brushing their teeth, to avoid flushing the toilet without reason and to keep showers short.
2. Show them turn off electronics, lights and other items that use electricity. Explaining to kids how electricity is generated (and how important it is to conserve it) will make a big difference in getting them to remember not to waste energy. Remind them that they can open blinds instead of turning on the lights, and can open the door to catch a breeze instead of turning on a fan.
3. Tell kids about recycling. Take them around the house or school and show them how many items they use are recyclable. Setting up a small area to hold recyclable items will keep the concept in plain sight. It will also encourage the kids to get involved and start adding items to the pile.
4. Take them outdoors often to appreciate nature. This reminds kids of what they are striving to save. If they can see animals in their natural habitats and plants that need clean water and air to survive, they will better understand how all of their eco-friendly actions are actually making a difference.
