Optimizing a camouflage deer blind can help you get a shot at a trophy deer.
A deer blind is an effective way to conceal yourself and your movements when hunting. However, the deer blind itself, particularly in the first year or two of placement, can be enough to keep wary deer away if they notice it. Painting your deer blind camouflage will help it blend into the landscape and improve your chances of seeing deer.
Preparation
To ensure that the paint will last as long as possible, clean the blind thoroughly to remove dirt. You may want to sand the blind to eliminate rough spots or any rusted areas if you have used any metal construction.
Selecting Paint Type
Use a quality outdoor paint that is formulated for the deer blind material. A latex paint will peel and weather poorly. A primer is not necessary if you have a wood blind, but may be needed for a metal construction. Because of the irregular pattern you will want to paint, spray paint is an excellent medium and is reasonably inexpensive. Colors should be based on the prevailing colors of the surroundings, such as dark green tones for a pine forest.
Painting the Pattern
There is no exact science to painting a camouflage pattern. The best practice is to view each side of your blind from a slight distance and try to incorporate the physical surroundings into your pattern. If a large tree is behind the blind from the direction that you are looking, try to incorporate that tree into the camo pattern. Deer are color blind so the main goal is to create a pattern that breaks up the hard lines of the blind.
Paint for the Season
One of the biggest errors one makes when painting a blind is to paint it to suit the surroundings for the time you are painting it. For example, most hunters build or work on their blinds during the summer but hunt in the autumn and winter. If you are primarily surrounded by deciduous trees, summer camo would have a lot of greens and browns to match the leaves. This pattern may actually stand out more in the hunting season as the trees will have dropped their leaves and the surroundings are primarily dull browns and gray.
