Make Trim And Window Painting And Edging Simpler

Painting the trim and edging in a room takes some patience.

Painting the trim and edging in a room can liven it up, with minimal cost and work. Even if your walls are a color that complements your decor, a change to the trim color makes a noticeable difference. Trim and edging includes the baseboards, the wood around the windows or doors that frame them and other pieces that are used to frame or cover raw edges where drywall or your wall covering meets the edge. Taping off the wall from the edges and trim makes the job much easier.

Instructions

1. Clean the trim and edges well before painting. Use a rag or sponge dipped in soap and water to remove any dirt or dust. Allow to dry.

2. Sand the current finish on the trim and edging if there is one. The surface should be smooth.

3. Tape along the wall where it meets the trim and edging with blue painter's tape or masking tape. Tape the window pane where it meets the edges and trim to protect it from paint as well.

4. Prime the trim and edging, if any of the edges are raw or repaired.

5. Stir your paint and dip an angled brush either 1 or 2 inches wide into the paint. Load the brush only at the tip -- don't dip the whole brush.

6. Keep the brush wet in order to reduce brush marks as you paint.

7. Use a paint guard at the top of baseboards or along other edge pieces. Hold the guard firmly in place and move it along the edge as you paint. This guard helps you keep from painting places you couldn't tape or it can be used in conjunction with tape to keep the edges clean.
