The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" is a vast role-playing game with detailed landscapes and characters that can reduce the frames per second (FPS) and enjoyment of the game on slower computers. Frames per second is a good indication of how fast a game is running on your computer. Enabling advanced graphical options such as anti-aliasing or running at too-high a resolution when your computer is not powerful enough to do so will greatly lower FPS. You can improve the FPS in "Oblivion" by lowering the graphics settings and updating the game.
Instructions
1. Download and upgrade to Patch 1.2. Patch 1.2 was the last official patch for "Oblivion" and includes many bug and optimization fixes that will improve FPS.
2. Lower the resolution to match that of your monitor. For example, if your monitor displays at 1366 x 768, you'll want to set the in-game resolution to that setting or lower. Click "Options" on the main menu or press the "ESC" key while in-game and click "Options." Click the "Video" tab. Under resolution, select the appropriate resolution for your monitor.
3. Move the slider next to "Interior Shadows" and "Exterior Shadows" to the left. This will reduce character shadows, which has a great impact on FPS when multiple characters are on screen at once.
4. Click the drop-down menu next to "Water Detail" and select "Normal." If you find that the performance around water is not sufficient, you can reduce it to "Low" or "Off" altogether.
5. Click the drop-down menu next to "Texture Size" and select "Low."
