Fresh paint Interior Stairs

Interior stairs are often a focal point of the home.

Interior stairs are areas of the home that tend to suffer from heavy traffic; people often run up and down them several times a day. If the stairs are painted, they can soon become marked. Applying a new coat of paint to your stairs as soon as they start looking run down will ensure that they stay fresh-looking.

Instructions

1. Purchase the correct paint for your interior stairs. Make sure your paint is suitable for both the tread and the riser of your stairs. Some paints require a sealant or primer before you use them.

2. Prepare your interior stairs by sanding down any lumps and rough spots with sandpaper.

3. Apply painter's tape and thick butcher paper to the steps. Paint the handrail, starting from the top and using a 2-inch trim brush. Pay attention to all surfaces of the handrail, making sure the paint is evenly spread.

4. Use painter's tape to protect the steps from drips of paint from the balusters if they are being painted a different color than the rest of the staircase. Mask them neatly where the balusters join the steps. If you are using one color only, use a damp cloth to wipe drips and stop them drying into hard lumps.

5. Start with the top step after you have completed the handrail and balusters. Paint the underside of the first nosing, then move on to the first riser.

6. Paint the tread of the first step and work down the staircase, painting every other step. This lets you stand on the unpainted steps while the others dry.

7. Place 6-inch squares of cardboard on the painted steps when they are completely dry. Stand on these to paint the remaining steps, and leave them there until the entire staircase is dry, so that other people know what steps they can use.
