Choose An Exterior Siding Color For That House

Choose the right vinyl siding color, because it's likely that you will be living with it for some time.

When people look at your home, they take in the color first. The color influences how they perceive the rest of your home. A color that's pleasing will invite passersby to admire your landscaping and porch decor. A garish color can be an immediate turnoff. If your home is painted, you can turn a mistake into an asset relatively easily. But if you have vinyl siding, you must take special care when you choose a color. It's probable that you will be living with that color for quite some time.

Instructions

1. Study the colors of the houses on your street. You don't want to pick a color so bright or drastically different that you set your house apart in a negative way. For example, if all the houses on your block are neutral, such as tan or light gray, bubble-gum-pink definitely won't harmonize. You can, however, use siding in a contrasting color to make your house look distinctive. A rustic red or forest green home can look quite distinctive on a street where tan and light gray homes are predominant.

2. Research your home, and give it a historically accurate color. Check out reference materials at the library to find out the colors that were used on homes built when yours was. An Arts and Crafts home built in the 1920s often had natural colors, such as brown and gray. Victorian homes combined colors that aren't often used together today, such as burgundy, deep green and light tan. Even if you plan to use vinyl siding, consult with a paint supplier. Many can offer you guidance in selecting historically accurate colors.

3. Factor in your climate. For example, if you live in Florida or Arizona and want to keep your cooling costs down, pick a light color over a dark one. Dark colors absorb heat.

4. Pick trim colors that complement the vinyl siding that you've selected. White trim can look crisp against deep blue siding. Canary yellow can be a pleasing contrast with dark-gray siding. Consider more than one trim color to give your home a polished look.

5. Go to a siding-supply store and take a sample or two home with you. Judge how each sample looks at various times of day and in various locations around your house.
