Be A Children'S Face Painter

Many children's birthday parties feature face painting.

Face painting is a prevalent offering at many fairs, festivals and children's party events. Face-painting artists may create small designs, such as flowers or stars, on the child's cheeks or paint her entire face to resemble an animal or character, such as a tiger. If you are a natural artist and enjoy working with kids, you may want to pursue a part-time children's face-painting career or start your own face-painting small business. While this type of job typically doesn't require a formal education, you must be somewhat artistically gifted.

Instructions

1. Prepare for your face-painting career by researching the market. Visit face-painting booths and artists at local family and children's events. Learn what other face painters charge for different designs. Take community art classes to practice your future craft.

2. Put together a face-painting supplies kit. Buy for water-based paints that are specifically made for face painting, rather than other types of craft paints that may irritate or stain your little clients' faces. Don't forget to include glitter face paint, as this will appeal to tweens and teens.

3. Study different face-painting designs, and practice them on your children or relatives. Experiment with several types of designs, such as a full-face mask, half-face mask and cheek art. If you don't have much painting experience, start out with small designs, such as stars around the child's eyes or hearts on the cheeks.

4. Choose your face-painting specialty, such as comic book heroes or animals, including tigers, rabbits, frogs and elephants. Set prices for your painting services.

5. Build a client base. For example, call local party planners and offer your services. Talk to other parents and let them know you're available for parties. Research upcoming community events and call the main organizer. If you want to start a full-fledged business, place an ad for your services in the local online yellow pages or post your company description on free online job boards.

6. Gain any state-required license for your small business. Some states won't require any special certification for one-person painters, but others may mandate certification because you're putting topical agents on clients.

7. Create business cards, flyers or brochures, and give them to customers to refer to their friends and neighbors. Create a painting booth out of a card table, a comfortable chair for your clients and a painting stool for you.
