Fresh paint An Area Silver

Adding a metallic silver paint to a room gives a cool, modern look. Metallic paint has tiny bits of mica flakes embedded into the paint solution. Mica flakes are often seen in other materials such as lipsticks, nail polish and eye shadows. Artificial or natural sunlight is necessary when using metallic paint. The silver will not reflect in a dark room and will look a dull brown. Painting a room silver takes several coats of paint and more time than most paint projects, yet the end results can be stunning.

Instructions

1. Visit a local hardware or paint store to view different metallic shades before deciding what color silver to paint the walls. Look at products sold by companies specializing in metallic paints such as Modern Masters or Faux Effects. These companies produce hundreds of different metallic paint colors with many different silver options.

2. Prep the room for the upcoming project. Clear all furniture and accessories out of the room. Take off all electrical outlet and light switch covers. Remove all items hanging from the walls, including nails and screws. Wrap drapery or curtains in plastic. Place drop cloths on all exposed flooring. Patch any nail holes that will not be used again. Skim holes with joint compound and sand smooth. Wipe dust away with a damp rag.

3. Tape off the baseboards and ceiling area with painter's tape. Use wide tape to avoid paint spills reaching outlying areas. Burnish the tape by rubbing it with a fingernail, credit card or other hard material to prevent paint seepage.

4. Paint the walls a deep dark black or gray; do not use a light gray. Use a roller to apply the latex paint on the walls. With a paint brush, apply paint to the perimeter of the wall, where the roller cannot reach. Ensure that the surface has a solid, even coloration with no missed marks. Allow the paint to dry for four to six hours, unless otherwise directed on the paint can.

5. Use a foam roller to apply the silver paint. Roll the paint onto the wall using organic movement---do not roll the paint on using traditional vertical rolls. Randomly roll and overlap the paint. Realize that the paint may appear translucent or see-through depending on the mica content and quality of the paint. Roll to the edge of all the walls, as close as possible to the tape. Use a small brush to fill in unpainted areas around the perimeter. Allow the paint to dry for four to six hours, unless otherwise directed on the paint can.

6. Continue to add layers of silver paint to the walls using the random rolling method. Remember that some paint brands may require only one layer of silver paint, while others may require up to five. Allow adequate drying time between layers---the more drying time the better, especially when many layers are added.

7. Remove the tape around the room once a solid coat of silver is visible. Use a razor blade to cut away the tape if it is peeling up any silver paint from the wall. Clean all paint tools in warm water. Pull up all drop clothes and return furniture and accessories to the room. Replace outlet and electrical covers. Add accent lighting as necessary for additional reflection.
