House Painting 101

The basic types of house paints are oil-based and latex.

Armed with at least basic information, the novice house painter can successfully complete many projects. Understanding the basic types of house paints available, calculate the amount of paint needed, and clean up are a few examples.

Basic Types of House Paints

House paints are divided into exterior and interior paints, which may be oil-based or latex. Latex paints use water as a solvent, while oil-based paints use chemical solvents that are often petroleum in origin, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Oil-base paints are flammable and are considered more polluting than latex paints.

Calculating How Much to Use

Paint cans are labeled with how many square feet of wall their contents are supposed to cover. To calculate the square footage of an exterior or interior wall, multiply its length by its height. Subtract the square footage of openings like doors and windows from the first number.

Cleaning

Cleaning latex paint--from, say, a brush--requires only soap, water and the proper space to do it. Be sure the runoff paint does not soak into the ground. Oil-based paints require paint thinners and solvents to clean, which are all hazardous. Therefore, none of them can be dumped down the drain or onto the ground. Secure waste paint and solvents in sealed containers and contact the local public waste management facility to get directions on dispose of them.
