Refinishing a bathtub is more affordable than replacing it.
Over time and use, a ceramic tub finish wears and no amount of cleaning will make it sparkle and shine like when it was new. Dull, dingy tubs in otherwise good condition require painting and refinishing. Painting the bathtub is a much more affordable and a less messy option than removing and replacing the tub.
Instructions
1. Remove caulking around the tub by gripping the caulk with needle-nose pliers and pulling it out of cracks and crevices around the perimeter. Use a razor blade to shave away and cut off small, stuck-on pieces.
2. Load a palm-grip sander with medium-grit sandpaper and sand the entire surface of the bathtub to remove the shiny surface and give the primer a good gripping surface. Use medium-grit sandpaper to sand hard to reach areas by hand.
3. Vacuum the dust from the bathtub.
4. Wash the bathtub with a degreasing detergent, rinse well and dry thoroughly.
5. Apply painters tape to faucets, fixtures and edges where the tub meets the wall. Tape heavyweight paper over all other surfaces in the room in order to avoid paint splatter on floors, walls, sinks and mirrors.
6. Apply a thin and even layer, no more than 1/16-inch thick, of epoxy-bonding agent to the surface of the tub with a lint-free cloth and allow the bonding agent to set up for 5 to 10 minutes or as otherwise specified on the container.
7. Fill a paint sprayer with an epoxy-based primer, spray a light layer, no more than 1/16-inch thick, on the surface of the tub and allow it to dry for 1 to 2 hours. Apply a second light coat of primer and allow it to dry fully. Remove the primer and wash the paint bucket of the paint sprayer.
8. Fill the paint sprayer with an epoxy-based paint and spray two paper-thin coats, no more than 1/16-inch thick, of paint on the entire bathtub surface, allowing each coat to dry completely between applications, usually 2 to 3 hours. Remove the paint from the paint sprayer bucket and wash thoroughly.
9. Fill the paint sprayer with a clear epoxy sealant and spray two thin coats, no greater than 1/16-inch thick, onto the bathtub surface, allowing each coat to dry fully between applications, generally 2 to 3 hours.
