Oriented-strand board (OSB) is made of wood strands layered in alternating directions and compressed under extremely high pressure. The top layer is covered with resin-coated paper to allow it to maintain its integrity when exposed to the elements. Exterior trim made from oriented-strand board is not the most durable and needs repainting every 5 to 7 years to maintain its appearance and durability.
Instructions
1. Clean the oriented-strand board exterior trim before you start to paint.
2. Purchase an acrylic-latex primer, an exterior grade acrylic-latex paint and a respirator or face mask designed to filter out harmful paint fumes. Use a primer for the oriented-strand board exterior even if it comes pre-primed from the factory.
3. Put the mask on and use a paintbrush to apply one coat of primer. Let it dry and apply a second coat. Let the second coat of primer dry.
4. Use a clean paintbrush to paint the oriented-strand board exterior trim with the acrylic-latex paint. A second coat may be necessary to achieve the look and color saturation you want even after two coats of primer. An additional coat of paint also gives the oriented-strand board exterior trim an extra measure of protection against the elements.
5. Re-prime and repaint the oriented-strand board exterior trim every 5 to 7 years to keep the trim looking new and to maintain the extra protection from the elements that primer and paint provide.
