A good paint job adds personality to a dull gray concrete wall.
Many houses and apartments have concrete walls. Instead of staring at lifeless gray stone, try customizing your concrete walls with painted-on designs. Painted concrete is affordable, requires little maintenance and easily blends with any decorating style. It is important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines when using any product on concrete. It is also imperative to properly cleanse, prime and seal the surface. Avoid touching painted concrete for at least 48 hours---or until the paint has fully dried.
Instructions
1. Sweep the wall. Then use a damp cloth and scrub brush to remove stuck-on dirt.
2. Spray a degreaser onto the surface and allow it to sit on the dampened surface for as long as the manufacturer suggests. A foaming cleanser will stay on the wall better than a liquid type.
3. Rinse the wall thoroughly with water and dry it with a clean, cotton cloth. Allow any remaining moisture to air-dry before painting.
4. Apply one or two coats of concrete primer. Allow the primer to dry completely.
5. Apply the base coat of wall paint and allow it to dry. Draw or stencil your desired designs over the base coat. Allow the paint to dry.
6. Seal the wall with polyurethane. Allow the surface to cure before touching it. Lightly sand the wall with fine-grit sandpaper between each coat of polyurethane. Do not sand the final coat.
