Auto body painting careers are found within car dealerships, auto body repair shops, the auto manufacturing industry and other transportation manufacturing sectors. The job outlook for auto body painting careers is strong in multiple career sectors, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Painters with several years of experience and Automotive Service Excellence certification are sought out during the hiring process for auto collision repair technician careers.
Instructions
1. Educate yourself on techniques for car painting. High schools often offer auto shop classes that include painting basics. Community colleges offer auto body technician certificates and associate's degrees. The certificates or associate's degrees often include painting specializations. Both high school classes and college courses may require the student to purchase and use personal painting tools. Inquire about apprenticeship programs or work experience gained during the educational opportunities.
2. Work at a company that performs auto body painting. The certification process requires a minimum of two years experience of painting cars. During employment, request feedback from supervisors on your painting skills and techniques. Early on, painting jobs may involve painting prep-work such as taping, sanding or polishing. Experienced painting jobs include the use of advanced painting equipment and paint mixing.
3. Print out a work experience reporting form off of the ASE website. Fill in all education and work experience that includes hands-on automobile painting. Register online with ASE for the Collision Repair and Refinish Certification Test. Select the B2 test that covers painting and refinishing. Choose a location to take the computerized test. Print out the test admission ticket. Submit the work experience reporting form to ASE by mail or fax once you are registered for the test.
4. Order a practice test from ASE. The certification practice test costs $14.95 and includes questions that are similar to the actual testing. Once the practice test is completed, ASE provides a score and feedback on the test performance.
5. Take along the test admission ticket and photo identification on test day. The painting certification test contains 65 questions and lasts approximately 90 minutes. The certification test costs $30 as of 2011, according to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. You must take the ASE recertification test every five years to stay current in ASE databases.
