A combined kitchen and living room area can make each room lose its individuality.
A combined kitchen and livingroom area is a common feature in many homes. This arrangement brings a feeling of spaciousness with it. However, it also takes away some of the individual personality of the two rooms. This issue can be remedied by using color combinations, furniture pieces and other decorative accessories together. These looks when coordinated together help the rooms look pulled together, but still distinct from one another.
Instructions
1. Separate the two rooms visually by adding two different colors of paint. Paint the kitchen area one color and the living room area a contrasting color. That will give each room its own look. If you select a common color scheme for both rooms, you can tie the look together by the accessories and by the accent paint colors. For example, if you paint the kitchen sherbet orange and the living room light pink, the accessories will be pink in the kitchen and orange in the living room.
2. Place a large piece of furniture, such as a tall bookcase, between the kitchen and the living room; make sure there's room to move between both rooms. One side of the bookcase will function as shelf space while the other will act as a wall on which you can hang artwork. Place the shelf side toward the kitchen. If there's no way the bookshelf will fit, mark off each room with the paint only or with a smaller piece of furniture, such as a table.
3. Lay throw rugs on the floor in the two room --- in front of the bookshelf is a good spot. This is another way to tie the two color schemes together if you buy one rug in each of your colors.
4. Push your sofa up against the bookcase. It'll support the bookcase, and allow you to hang artwork on the back of the case. Make sure it's not heavy artwork. Photos or Asian scroll art offer some lightweight choices.
5. Position a coffee table and a chair or two in front of the bookcase and couch.
6. Put a small kitchen table in front of the bookcase. Arrange candles in the middle as centerpieces. Bring a similar centerpiece into the living room portion and place it on the coffee table or the side tables. Again, this ties the two looks together.
7. Select some accessories that look good in both the kitchen and the living room. For example, choose a retro clock and hang it on the side of the bookshelf between the rooms or throw a table cloth on the kitchen table and add a table runner to the coffee table made from the same material.
