Pre-treat a smoky room with white vinegar.
If you are trying to get rid of cigarette smoke smell and stains in a room of your home, you have a challenging task before you. Removing the smells and stains left behind by people who formerly smoked in the home requires both the cleaning and the painting of the walls in the house. Keep in mind that you may not be able to get out the smells and stains on your own. If you find that the room still smells like smoke after cleaning and painting, call a professional smoke-removing company.
Instructions
1. Fill ceramic bowls with white vinegar or ammonia. Place the bowls throughout the room -- out of reach of children and animals -- and allow the bowls to sit untouched for several days. This treatment will help to get the smoke smell out of the walls and floors.
2. Clean the walls that can be washed with an all-purpose cleaner that is non-abrasive and a sponge or damp cloth. Allow the walls to dry completely before painting.
3. Spread a tarp out in the room to catch excess paint.
4. Open, mix and pour a primer sealant into a paint tray. The sealant will "seal" any remaining smoke stains and smells. Dip a roller brush into the paint and apply to the walls using a "W" or zigzag painting technique in which you draw the design and go back over it in one stroke. You then fill in the spaces in between the design. Repeat until the entire wall is covered in primer. Allow the primer to dry completely. Paint the wall with the desired color.
