Homeowners can add fun, functional spaces to their house designs in the form of home game rooms. Often found in basements, where the once dank spaces become usable recreational rooms, the leisure spaces have popular appeal. There are quite a few design themes to bring these home getaways to life.
Sports Theme
A sports theme is a simple theme that is easily customizable. Pick any sport--soccer, baseball, football or hockey--for inspiration. The color palette for the space is easily drawn from the team colors; the team you choose to feature can be be pro, college or retro. Paint the walls in the the team's primary color, using the secondary team color as an accent wall. Frame team jerseys to hang as wall art along with prints. Hang a large print of the sports stadium for a big impact.
Modern Retro
Colorful mid-20th-century design elements makes for a light-spirited game room that's fun for all ages. Start with black-and-white linoleum floors to set the stage. When it comes to color, think bright tones such as pinks, reds and blues. A vinyl diner-style booth is a nice addition to build on the theme. A soda fountain bar with leather and chrome seats also works well. Line the walls with an eclectic mix of framed advertising from the era and pictures of classic cars. For a wow factor, include a vintage Coca-Cola bottle machine or a pinball machine.
Bar Theme
The classic bar theme never goes out of style. Line the walls with wainscoting and crown molding and wood trim. Keep the color palette dark to evoke the right mood. A pool table makes a great centerpiece. Place a dart board on the wall. For an updated version, add multiple, medium-sized flat-screen televisions above the wainscoting to play multiple sports events at once. A small bar table with stools makes a good seating area.
Casino Theme
Poker night will never be the same with a Vegas-themed casino game room. The focus of the room should be a high-quality, felt-lined poker table. A variety of neutral colors would work well with this design. Decorate the walls with gambling themed art prints. Leather chairs on casters, is brings sophistication and comfort to the space. Add pizazz with video poker or slot machines.
