Exterior doors are often painted a brighter color to accent the front of a home and make the entryway stand out. Unfortunately, the combination of sun and rain can cause the paint to fade prematurely. As an alternative, you can install a new exterior steel door. In either case, you will need to paint it.
Instructions
1. Sand the entire door with 220-grit sandpaper. Don't worry if you sand through some of the paint and expose metal.
2. Clean the door using hot water and soap. Rinse the door with clean water after cleaning to remove any soap residue.
3. Tape the door handle and hinges with blue painter's tape to protect them from being painted.
4. Prop the door in the open position by wedging something under it to keep it from moving.
5. Apply primer to the door. Start at the top and work your way to the bottom. Paint one side at a time. Use a 2-inch angled brush so you can get paint in the corners of the door panels and still be able to paint the flat sections fairly quickly.
6. Allow the primer to dry and lightly sand it with 220-grit sandpaper. Wipe the door clean of any sanding dust.
7. Paint the door. Again, start at the top and work your way down one side at a time. Once the first coat dries, sand the door with 400-grit sandpaper and apply the final coat of paint.
8. Remove the blue tape after the door has dried completely. You can use a hair dryer to accelerate the drying process, so the door doesn't have to remain in the open position as long.
