Fresh paint Old Incomplete Exterior Wood

Having old, unfinished wood--if it isn't rotting or decayed--anywhere in your yard or house adds a rustic and antique look to your property. But what if you want to paint this wood with a stain or color? Old and unfinished wood is often coarse and difficult to paint, but knowing tackle this feat will serve useful in your future exterior painting endeavors. Let's say you want to paint an unfinished wood piece in your yard or on your house. The steps are simple.

Instructions

1. Paint your unfinished wood in the shade, out of direct sunlight. If the paint dries too quickly, it will become tacky and won't dry correctly. A garage or a part of your yard blocked by the sun are perfect options.

2. Paint the unfinished wood with a thick, even coat--whatever color it is--with the wide paint brush or a paint roller. You should only have to use one coat of paint, so make it a good one. Make sure every inch of the wood is covered. If you need to put on a second coat, give the first coat about three hours to dry before moving on the the second.

3. Spray dry paint with glossy paint sealer. This will seal your paint job, giving it a refreshing new look and protecting it from the weather. The sealer adds longevity to the paint on your wood, limiting how much you will need to touch it up.

4. Perform an annual scraping, painting and sealing. This will reduce the risk of the exterior wood rotting and decaying, adding years of life to it and potentially saving you hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars. Steps one, two and three should be done every year to maximize the life of your wood.
