A wave contains several colors blended and layered together.
Corel Painter X allows you paint as if you were using real oils, pastels or watercolors. The software also allows you mix and match media, something that would be extremely expensive over time with actual media. Painting waves in Painter X is easier if you understand traditional media techniques, however you can practice the following steps to learn create waves. Paint waves may seem difficult because you have to take into account environmental factors that reflect in the water such as the sky, surrounding land and focus points around the waves.
Instructions
1. Open Corel Painter X and click on "File," and then "New." Change the width and height to 500 pixels and click "OK." Press Ctrl M on your keyboard to center the image. Press Cmd M on a Mac.
2. Choose a liner brush from the brush palette. This is any solid brush that paints a small line. Choose a medium blue. Looking at your reference photographic, paint lines which follow the ridges of the wave. Outline the areas where the waves crash and turn to foam.
3. Paint a yellow stripe on the top half of the underside of the wave. Paint a light green stripe in the middle of the underside of the wave. Paint the base of the wave a dark blue.
4. Blend the three colors together until you achieve an even transition between each color. You can use any of the smooth blenders in the blender brushes category. Blend in white paint on the top of the foam, also in a circular motion. Paint a thin line of light blue on top of the white.

6. Paint light blue foam lines on the underside of the wave reaching from the dark blue to the middle of the underside. Use a small one pixel brush at full opacity. Next, paint white foam on the top to the wave ridge, ending in stippled white to simulate a foam spray.
