Consider Using A Fresh paint Color With An Auto

A photograph of two cars

Graphics software makes it possible to try different paint colors on any automobile. This is very useful before making a purchase. It is also useful if you are considering painting a vehicle that you already own. In addition, this technique is used frequently in graphic design to meet the specifications of the job.

You need only to isolate the painted portion of the vehicle, and use color adjustments to change the color of the car. The results are very realistic, and can be achieved with a number of graphics programs, including Adobe Photsohop, or the free graphics program Gimp.

Instructions

1. Scan your photograph if it is not already saved in a digital format. Scan the photograph large in size and high in resolution. Open your preferred graphics program and open your automotive image, or import it if you scanned the photograph. Create a duplicate of the image on a new layer.

2. Select and isolate the parts of the vehicle you want to recolor. Use a selection tool to trace around the body of the car in Gimp. Alternately, create a selection and use a layer mask in Adobe Photoshop to create a boundary between the body of the car and the rest of the photograph.

3. Create a new layer to hold the new car body color. Make sure the selection is still active and visible around the perimeter of the automobile's body. Grab a color fill tool and select the new color you desire. Click inside the selection to apply the new color to the body of the vehicle.

4. Adjust the new automotive color to meet your specifications. Do this by changing the blend mode of the color fill layer. Experiment with different modes to achieve your desired effect.

5. Create several duplicates of your automotive image--all with different paint applications--and examine them side-by-side. This gives you a very accurate way to compare different paint versions. When you are ready to save your altered automotive image, save it in the file format native to your graphics program first. This allows you to work with the original photo and the actions you created at a later date, if needed.
