Fresh paint Gourd Bird Houses

Gourds come in a variety of sizes and styles. Painting them is easy and fun for all ages. If you plan to paint a Martin gourd birdhouse, stick to white or very light hues of color. These birds are attracted to light colors while other bird species show less preference. Remember that the darker the color, the warmer the interior of the house will be and that isn't healthy for hatchlings. Gourds can be bought cleaned or uncleaned. Cleaned gourds are easier to work with and saves time and energy.

Instructions

Preparation

1. Brush the surface of the gourd with the paint brush and wipe away any dust or debris from the surface. Tear a sheet of wax paper from the roll and set it under the gourd. Shake the paint well and pour a liberal amount into the paint tray. Load the brush until the paint is halfway up the bristles. Don't overload the brush, since it will make application more difficult.

2. Hold the gourd by the top stem, if there is no stem, then hold it as close to the top as possible. Apply the paint from the top, spreading it evenly toward the bottom of the gourd. Continue to apply the paint until the gourd is completely covered. The surface is porous, which helps the paint adhere and dry quickly. If it doesn't dry quickly enough to paint the entire surface, allow one half to dry before continuing on to the remaining area. When the paint is dry, apply a second coat.

3. Clean the brush in water and dry it well. Pour weather resistant varnish onto the tray and apply the varnish in the same manner as you did with the paint. Allow adequate drying time before applying a second coat. If the surface feels rough to the touch, smooth it with a paper bag and wipe it clean before applying the next coat of varnish.
