Apply silver
leaf to your favorite piece of furniture for a new look.
Silver leafing is a fairly simple cosmetic technique -- known as gilding -- for adding an antique or shiny look to many different items, including furniture. Silver leafing can be applied to mirrors, tables, chests, nightstands and more. The process is straight forward, but requires a degree of patience as silver leaf sheet are very thin and fragile. You can learn to apply silver leafing to any furniture of your choosing as long as you allow yourself ample time for the application of the leafing.
Instructions
1. Mix approximately 1/4 quart of your paint color into the paint primer. Once the primer dries this will prevent you from having to add several coats of your paint to conceal the primer. Allow primer to dry.
2. Apply two coats of your paint to your furniture. Allow the paint to dry.
3. Coat the furniture with a thin coat of adhesive glue. Wait approximately 90 minutes for the glue to become "tacky" -- sticky to the touch. The tacky surface is required for the silver leaf to stick to coating the furniture.
4. Apply the silver leaf to the furniture, dabbing it against the tacky furniture with your soft-bristle brush. Work your way from the bottom of the surface, up.
5. Apply the silver leaf to the other tacky surface areas of the furniture, including the inside of the legs, sides and top.
6. Allow furniture 24 hours to cure and dry.
