Bookshelves serve many purposes, holding such materials as photo albums, CDs, DVDs, knickknacks, souvenirs and books. Changing the color of the bookshelves helps them reflect a piece of your personality and your home's decor. You can choose from many colors and styles, and the designs are unlimited. Painting bookshelves can be a project in which the whole family can participate.
Instructions
1. Disassemble any hardware that connects the shelving, including brackets, with a screwdriver.
2. Clean the bookshelves with a cleaning solvent or solution of one part mild dish detergent to four parts water. Wipe down the shelving with a clean tack cloth to remove remaining dust particles or any debris residing on the bookshelves.
3. Lay a dropcloth down in the area in which you are working to keep paint from dripping onto the floor.
4. Apply primer to the shelving if the current finish is glossy or metallic. The primer can be spray or liquid brush paint. Apply according to the directions on the can, and let it dry fully before painting the first top coat.
5. Open the paint can with a metal paint can opener, and stir the paint with a wooden stir stick. Stir all the way to the bottom of the can to mix the paint properly. Pour some paint into a clean paint tray, and coat your brush or roller evenly before applying it to the shelving.
6. Paint the bottom of the shelving first using a mini-roller or paintbrush. The mini-roller will make a more even coat, but the brush will do the job as well. Let it dry before painting the rest of the shelves.
7. Add a second coat of paint, if needed. Usually a second coat is required only if the first is thin or some spots are not painted.
