There are many workbooks that contain coloring mazes and connect-the-dots.
Coloring games are useful in the classroom, at birthday parties, at home on a rainy day or any time kids want to get creative. Kids learn about color, art and hand-eye coordination. There are multitudes of games that kids will love to participate in while coloring.
Outdoor Games
Kids can color hopscotch games and play against each other.
Outdoor games are a way to get kids out in the sunshine while keeping them creative. Treasure hunts always excite children. Have children color clues on the sidewalk with chalk or sidewalk paints. Each clue leads their peers closer to a "treasure." Kids can break up into teams and race to the final step.
Another outdoor coloring activity is to have kids lie down on the sidewalk or on large pieces of paper and trace each other. Kids can then color themselves in with chalk or crayons.
Indoor Games
Trace a mural on the wall and let kids paint or color it in.
There are plenty of indoor games that involve coloring, too. If you have a group of girls, coloring paper dolls and their accessories is an easy and creative activity. Kids also love to create their own crayons. Have children collect broken pieces of crayons and place them in oiled muffin cups. Melt them in the oven and allow them to cool. When you pop them out they become homemade rainbow crayons.
Older kids may enjoy playing the coloring version of "Win, Lose or Draw." Split up your group into smaller teams and have the teams color pictures on an easel; they then take turns guessing what the picture is.
Painting Games
Kids can paint on paper, boxes or even T-shirts
Kids love the messiness of paint, whether you choose watercolor, craft or finger paints. Paint-by-number games are educational and challenging for younger kids. Adults can pass out paint-by-number worksheets and students can race to see who can finish their picture first. There are also great wooden painting games available at craft stores, where kids can build and paint everything from airplanes to jewelry boxes.
Internet Games
Kids enjoy virtual coloring almost as much as actual coloring.
There are dozens of sites that offer virtual coloring fun. If your child is computer literate, then these coloring games can offer hours of entertainment. One of the best sites is the PBS Kids site (see Resources), where there are educational games themed from Sesame Street to Barney. There are also many sites that offer online fun, as well as print outs. Some to consider are The Kidz Page website and the Crayola website (see Resources).
