A tape measure is one of the supplies you need to paint stripes above chair rails.
Painting stripes above a chair rail is an inexpensive way to give the area the look of wallpaper or wallpaper border. This project only takes a few basic supplies and no artistic talent. You can paint one or more horizontal stripes above the chair rail or paint vertical stripes in wide or narrow widths. Using colors that are near the shade of your wall paint creates a monochromatic look, or you can use contrasting or complementary colors for a bold appeal.
Instructions
1. Look at other rooms with painted stripes and decide whether you want horizontal stripes above the chair rail or vertical stripes.
2. Use the tape measure and a lead pencil to mark off where you want the stripes. Keep in mind that narrow vertical stripes may make a large room appear too busy. Using vertical stripes that are 6 inches in width or horizontal stripes that are 1 foot wide are appropriate for most rooms. Wider stripes tend to push the walls out visually and make the room appear larger.
3. Place the painter's or masking tape on the guidelines you made with the lead pencil. Use the tape along the entire space from the edge of the ceiling down to the chair rail or from wall to wall if using horizontal stripes.
4. Place tape all along the top edge of the chair rail to avoid accidentally getting paint on it. Wipe off any drops as soon as they occur with a dry cloth.
5. Paint inside the taped areas to create the wall stripes. Allow the paint to thoroughly dry before removing the tape. You will have clean crisp, stripes that enhance the atmosphere and other colors in the room.
