Fresh paint Play Equipment

Use a durable enamel.

You can paint children's play equipment if you meticulously prepare each surface according to its composition. Play equipment can be composed of wood, metal, plastic, vinyl, fiberglass or all of the above. Each of these materials will reject a painted finish unless it is conditioned for adhesion. Learn the proper way to improve each's adhesive qualities by using particular prep strategies based on the material you're working with. Once the play equipment is readied for adhesion, apply a durable paint capable of withstanding aggressive horse play.

Instructions

Prepare Surface

1. Scrub every portion of the play equipment you plan to paint with a degreasing soap. Wash even those areas that appear clean; unseen oils from children's hands can prevent adhesion.

2. Rinse the play equipment using a pressure washer. Equip the washer with a wide-angle tip that will prevent unintentional damage. Let the equipment dry for five hours.

3. Sand plastic, vinyl and fiberglass portions of the play equipment to encourage adhesion.

4. Place canvas drop cloths beneath the play equipment.

5. Coat each part of the play equipment with the appropriate primer, using a roller. Apply acrylic primer to bare wood, plastic, vinyl and fiberglass portions of the equipment. Add metal-etching primer to metallic portions; coat stained wood play equipment with shellac primer.

6. Touch-up the play equipment, using the proper brush. Touch-up acrylic and etching primer, using a polyester brush. Touch-up shellac primer, using a natural-bristled brush. Let the play equipment dry for two hours, or longer if needed.

7. Wash polyester brushes with water; clean natural-bristled brushes with alcohol.

8. Paint the play equipment as you primed it; use an acrylic enamel that will hold up to considerable duress. Don't let children play on the equipment for five hours or until the paint is completely dry.
