Art Deco Living Room
An art deco living room is a way to bring a theme to your space without being overall too fussy. It will help you balance your modern furniture with an older era. Plus, most people have never even seen an art deco living room so it gives you the opportunity to make your house stand out among all of the others.
Instructions
1. Make an entrance. A lot of movies from this period had a common theme: elegantly dressed women walking down staircases in slow motion. Bring this idea into your art deco living room. If you have a sunken living room, widen the steps so they go all the way across your entry way. This makes them seem more substantial. You might not even have an entry way in your house. Guests may walk straight into the living room. Try delineating the space by hanging an iron gate across from the door, or using a tall screen. This fits with the deco style while still allowing light to flow through your space.
2. Think of your favorite hotel lobby. This is an easy way to decide on decorate an art deco living room. Many hotels, both from that period & the present time decorate with this style. This is especially true in certain parts of Miami. Think of how crisp, clean & elegant these places always feel & then copy your favorite elements.
3. Look for unique furniture. The furniture was the focal point of an art deco living room. Look for a sofa that snakes around the room as an interesting sectional. You might even be able to find genuine art deco pieces affordably on craigslist. This is because people are favoring more modern furniture. Make your unusual style choice work to your advantage.
4. Use up lights. This is an instant way to turn your ordinary room into an art deco living room. It adds instant ambience & can highlight your favorite pieces like plants or artwork. If you really want to go all out, install rope lighting behind your crown molding or somewhere on your ceiling.
5. Don't forget the walls. Rich wood paneling works well in an art deco living room. If you have beautiful oak paneling, don't tear it out just because it isn't in style. Decorate around it. Sorry to say that if you have cheesy 80's paneling, it will probably have to go. Simulate paneling by adding molding rectangles throughout the room. Wallpaper is another popular deco feature. Just make sure that it isn't country or overwhelming. Think of using a bold geometric pattern instead of a subtle flower. Use it on your focal wall & paint the rest of the walls a complimentary color.
6. Pick a fabric & stick to it. In recent years, it's become more common to mix & match patterns. You might even find a sofa with three or four patterns on it. This isn't true to the art deco feeling. Pick one bold pattern & use it throughout the room. Mix it up with solid colors to add variety.
