Use Latex Fresh paint After Freezing It

Allow your paint to gradually return to room temperature before inspecting it.

Paint cans that are left out in the garage can freeze when temperatures drop. This does not necessarily mean that the paint is ruined. Not every can of latex paint will survive freezing temperatures, but some weather the change. Much depends on the conditions under which the paint was frozen. The only way to determine if your latex paint is salvageable is to thaw it out and examine it. If it passes inspection, it is safe to use on your walls just like any other can of paint.

Instructions

1. Bring the paint can indoors. Let it sit for 48 hours to allow it to gradually return to room temperature. Keep it closed.

2. Open the can.

3. Stir the paint with your paint paddle to thoroughly mix the contents.

4. Observe the paint. If there are any lumps, chunks or paint chips in the paint, it must be thrown out. If the paint looks smooth and liquid, as it did before it was frozen, it is safe to use.

5. Apply the paint to a thick sheet of paper or paper plate and allow it to dry. Coat the first patch of paint with a second and allow that to dry. Observe the paint. Frozen latex paint can loose some of its gloss once it goes through a freeze-thaw cycle. If the paint color is satisfactory, you can apply the paint immediately, or store it at a temperature above 60 degrees Fahrenheit for later use.
