Update The House

Some of the most expensive updates occur in the kitchen.

An updated home reflects a style that is well suited to you and your family. Additionally, these homes have newer appliances and more sophisticated embellishments than their older counterparts. The extent to which you choose to update your home often depends on your budget, as some updates are more costly than others. However, to reduce an update's cost, you can often do the work yourself or transform your home one room at a time. Dress up each room with new decor and paint before you buy new appliances and furniture.

Instructions

1. Paint each room in a new color. Choose from a palette of colors that complement your existing decor or furniture that you plan on buying as part of your home updating budget, or select shades that enhance your mood.

Neutral shades such as beige, brown and cream work well with many types of decor styles, as do pastel shades like baby blue, yellow and purple. Light yellow can work particularly well in an updated kitchen.

2. Accent one wall in the office or living room with a darker paint color, such as burgundy or forest green. Allow the paint to dry and then decorate the eye-catching wall with framed art, photos or a wall clock.

3. Install white crown molding in each room to add a touch of Victorian appeal to the home.

4. Add touches of simple decor, such as paintings, wall clocks and candles, to each room. For example, cobalt blue bottles can impart a country feel when placed on top of the kitchen cupboards. Scatter plants throughout your house to give it an earthy feel.

5. Upgrade your appliances as you are able to afford to do so. Replace your porcelain 1950s stove with a sleek stainless steel model, or invest in an ENERGY STAR washer and dryer set.

6. Invest in new furniture throughout the house as you are able. If new furniture is not workable in your budget, however, effect a quick update by placing furniture covers on old chairs and couches.

7. Install new curtains and light fixtures that complement your new furniture and paint.
