In Games Workshop's "Warhammer 40,000" tableltop miniature wargame, the Catachan Jungle Fighters are one of the most famous regiments of the Imperial Guard. Their home, the inhospitable jungle planet Catachan, makes them rugged soldiers, inured to danger and hardship. The Imperial Guard relies on large bodies of men to overwhelm the enemy with their numbers. This means that in order to field an Imperial Guard army, you'll need to paint a large number of models quickly. Fortunately, painting Catachans speedily is simple.
Instructions
1. Assemble your models and remove excess plastic or mold lines.
2. Undercoat your models, either by spraying them with a coat of black paint or brushing it on. Spraying is faster, but can miss tricky areas such as the undersides of arms.
3. Block in the base colors of your model using a large paintbrush. Paint the flesh with a dark, ruddy flesh tone such as Games Workshop's Tallarn Flesh. The trousers should be painted a deep green such as Catachan Green, while the vest should be a sandy brown color, such as Khemri Brown. Leave the details black for now.
4. Apply the main layer of color to your model, leaving the first layer to provide shading in the folds and recesses. The trousers should be painted with a lighter shade of green such as a mix of Catachan and Camo Green. Paint a lighter flesh tone on the raised areas of flesh, such as the muscles, chin, cheeks, fingers and nose. The darker flesh tone will provide shading for the hollows. Similarly, paint the vest with a lighter brown such as Kommando Khaki.
5. Apply a final highlight to the main areas of color. Brush this onto raised folds in clothing as well as protruding areas of flesh such as the tip of the nose, the cheeks and the shoulders. For the trousers, this highlight should be a light green such as pure Camo Green, while for the flesh a mid flesh-tone such as a mix of Dwarf Flesh and white will work. A light gray-brown should be the final tone for the vest. You can add a further highlight in a lighter shade to the very highest areas if you'd like.
6. Paint the details. These include the boots, weapon, hair, dog tags, headband, straps and pouches. Boots, straps, pouches and weapon casings should be left black to start with, then highlighted in lightening shades of gray. For the weapon casing, emphasize the hardness of the shape by making precise highlights along its edges and corners. The weapon barrel and dog tags can be painted in a dark metal shade such as Boltgun Metal and highlighted with a lighter shade such as Chainmail. The headband is traditionally red. A dark red base coat, such as Scab Red, can be highlighted with a brighter shade. Hair should be individual, since different soldiers in the squad will have different hair colors. For black hair, highlight the black base with dark brown or gray.
7. Add terrain to your figure's base. Spread a thin layer of white glue over the base and dip it into a basing material such as sand, gravel, flock or static grass. Wait for the glue to dry.
8. Protect your figure with a layer of varnish, either by applying it with a brush or spraying. Matte varnish will give a more natural appearance, while gloss varnish is harder and will give your figure better protection.
