Make your home inviting with good interior colors.
Picking interior colors for your home is a personal choice. The broad spectrum in colors available can make it a complicated choice as well. There are a lot of things to consider, but some color basics can help you find good matches that satisfy your taste, mood and existing decor. Take your time making your decisions to save time later redoing the task.
Instructions
1. Create a list of the items in the interior that will stay the same after your colors are chosen. For instance, you may have a wonderful divan that will definitely stay, and it's teal. You'll need to work around a particular item like that.
2. Pick a main color for the interior that matches your given items from Step 1. Use the a little color theory to help. Complementary colors like green and red are a powerful combination, maybe too powerful for your taste. Colors that are close to each other (like yellow and green) are less aggressive when paired. Lighter colors are easier on the eye; dark colors can be dramatic but also need a lot of light in the room. Find something that feels right to you and feels right with your existing furnishings.
3. Plan on painting the walls the main color, and start working on colors for accessories and window treatments. Too many colors will be confusing and can be dissonant. Stick to a main color and one or two adjunct colors. For example, if you are working with a light pink, choose a mint green for a complementary mix with a strong contrast. For softer tones, go for earth colors like ocher and sand, with a darker accent color like mahogany.
4. Seek out fabrics, pillows and area rugs that match your scheme. Don't overlook patterned and brocaded fabrics that can add some zing to the room.
