You can create a "greener" teen bedroom just by adding a few different elements.
Recycle old furniture
An old, repurposed desk is a great addition to a teen's room.
One of the best ways to create an eco-friendly teen bedroom is to recycle old furniture. Look around in your own home for old pieces of furniture such as aging armchairs, bookcases or end tables. Reupholster them or repaint them with earth-friendly paint to make the old furniture look like new. Make sure to include plenty of bookcases for storage and even an old desk for a study area. Eco-conscious teens will appreciate this repurposing of household items. If you don't have old furniture lying around your home, go to garage sales, flea markets and estate sales to purchase some vintage furniture.
Eco-friendly bedding
Opt for organic cotton or bamboo sheets and blankets.
Choose mattresses that don't contain chemicals like polybrominated diphenyl ethers. These are fire retardants that are added to the foam in most mattresses. Avoid the use of polyurethane foam in mattresses as well. Look for mattresses that are filled with cotton or wool. One of the most eco-friendly options are organic mattresses made with natural latex.
Opt for cotton or bamboo sheets and blankets. Both cotton and bamboo are renewable resources and are considered organic. Look for bedding that has no sizing chemicals added to the fabric.
Low-VOC paint
Choose paints with no or reduced toxins.
Choose paints that are low or no-VOC, which stands for "volatile organic compounds." These toxins are released into the air and can cause breathing problems. Most paint companies now manufacture at least one type of low- or no-VOC paint in a variety of colors.
