"Warhammer" is a role-playing tabletop game that takes place in various game worlds. Some of these worlds take place in a medieval setting while others take place in a science-fiction settings. To play the game, players will need to purchase figurines and paint them. While this may sound difficult to those who do not know properly paint, by following a few tips you will have your figurines painted and looking good.
Purchase Appropriate Paint
While the painter has more of an impact on how the model looks rather than what type of paint you use, you need to buy appropriate paint nonetheless. Do not buy the cheapest paints you can find as it will not look as good as it could. Instead, purchase high quality craft paint when painting the models. If you want to give your model a metallic look (i.e. if you are painting a space marine), purchase a metallic paint from brands such as GW, Coat d'arms, and Vallejo. These metallic paints from these brands are considered some of the best brands of metallic paint available by Warhammer enthusiasts.
Brush Varieties
Some people believe that you can never have enough of a certain thing. For Warhammer hobbyists, it's brushes. When you are starting out on your brush collection, purchase a variety of brushes from a hobby store. Purchase the smallest brush you can find and work your way up to the largest. It may be expensive at the moment, but you will have a variety of brushes to work with. When painting your figurines, you never know what type of challenge you will run into. You may want to paint very small details on a figurine but will not be able to do so without a very small brush. By purchasing varieties of brushes, you will be prepared to tackle anything that comes your way.
Thinning
Thinning is a technique that hurts every beginning painter of Warhammer figurines, and it is no surprise; thinning is confusing. There is no correct way to thin, and every color differs. With that being said, it is still important to thin appropriately. To figure out the best paint-to-thinner ratio for your paints, mix the thinner with some paint and paint a dummy figurine. You want the paint to not run into the cracks and to cease bubbling. To give you an idea if your paint is properly thinned, use these specifications: the paint must not run nor bubble, and the base coat must be solid after two coats on your figurine.
Coating
On the subject of coating, keep this rule in mind: do not fear a loaded brush. What this means is feel free to put as much paint onto your brush as possible--once the paint is thinned properly of course. The alternative to being stingy with your paint is it could make the figurine look spotty and ultimately poor in color. Do not paint a little here nor there; load the brush up and place a lot of paint onto the figurine.
Experimentation
Do not fall into a rut of painting the same way every time. For example, painting with a lot of paint and using the same brush every time may work for one figurine, but it may not work for another. Try new things. Instead, paint your next figurine with less paint with a smaller brush and vice versa. In short, experiment. When you experiment, you develop new techniques and find new things that work for you. You also learn become a better painter. The more you think outside the box and attempt to be different, the more varied you will become and the more talented. Master Warhammer painters did not become amazing by painting the same way over and over; the painters took risks and mixed things up; do the same.
