Take Proper Care Of African Masks

African masks are traditionally made with wood

African masks are decorative pieces that people often hang on their walls. What makes them special is the way in which artisans sculpt and paint them. Also, many African masks symbolize sentiments like love or peace. So, for all of these reasons, as well as their cost, it is important to take care of any African masks you purchase.

Instructions

1. Dust the African mask weekly. By removing soot and grime from the mask, you will let the wood breathe and prevent any paint on it from being tarnished permanently.

2. Oil the African mask. Apply wood oil to it every 30 days with a rag. Be sure to rub it in well. By doing so, you will preserve the life of the wood and prevent it from cracking.

3. Keep the African mask out of direct sunlight. The sun will dry out the wood and also affect its finish. What will the end result be? You'll have a warped discolored mask that won't be worth the amount of money you paid for it.

4. Set the African mask on a steady surface. It can be a stand, shelf or wall hook. Just be sure it is one that doesn't move. If the African mask falls to the ground, it could crack or chip. Of course, this will ruin the mask.

5. Don't set an African mask near water. Although it may look lovely sitting near a window, if you live in a rainy place, you are asking for trouble. Rain could change the condition of the wood and stain it. Therefore, make sure it is in a dry area of your house.
